Introduction

Hi!
I am Erna van der Merwe doing the Certificate in Relaxation Massage. I am originally from South Africa and imigrated to NZ in 1994 with my husband and two sons. We lived in Christchurch for 2 1/2 years, then Dunedin for 9 years, 1 year in Australia touring around and then back to Christchurch for the last three years.

I trained as a geneticist and worked in the field of human genetics for thirteen years, doing education and training.

I like doing foot reflexology and Indian head massage and am also very interested in doing therapeutic massage. My hobbies are four wheel driving, the rougher the better! Also patchwork, clarinet and piano.

I have always had an interest in massage and it's great to gain skills that enable me to do what I enjoy. I would love to work in a formal multidisciplinary clinic setting with other alternative health care providers.

Great profile Erna! Im not too good at four wheel driving - makes me real queasy up there in heights - a story from the Crown Range for example! My dad had a great big chevy which used to slide dangerously around corners - couldnt see the drop till you'd slid!

Thanks for your participation on the course last week -
I hope you get the time to practice your blogging and to do this I am suggesting a reflection on the first practice block - same sort of questions for each student - you can read share and discuss with each other.

Qs. what have you learnt - what do you still want to know...

Also - Have you got your texts yet?
if not try a Google search:
Can you define Posture (in relation to both your client and yourself).

See you in the Elluminate next week!

  2. DEFINITION and REFLECTION

Posture: The position of my body in space, e.g. sitting, standing, lying prone or supine. The same applies to the client, i.e.his/her body's position in space.

Reflection: I would like to know the insertions and origins of muscles involved in the position of the head and neck.

  3. Great stuff Erna, I am enjoying student mode, the text books are great. Are,nt new books delicious. Posture-maintaing an optimal body position for myself whilst massaging but an awareness in all I do. For the client; provide education, explanation to help them become posture aware and improve their well-being. I'm not sure if I comment here on posture or on my own page anyway prob do both!! Thanks so much for ride home last week
